Our Birthday Vacation Tradition

One of the intentional decisions we made early on in parenting was that we would try to prioritize experiences over things. In keeping with this intention, a few years ago we decided to take a yearly birthday vacation together, instead of making birthdays all about presents.

Since all four of us have spring birthdays, it's easy to combine the festivities into one bigger trip. We still celebrate our individual special days with cake and candles and a special family time, but the birthday vacation is definitely a highlight.

This year we stayed at this cute little farm in central Massachusetts. Our urban dwelling kiddos loved being able to run wild and free, jumping on the trampoline, holding baby chicks, playing with rabbits and goats and dogs any time they wanted. Abigail's favorite was this friendly little chick named Biscuit.

We also took some day trips to the Ecotarium in Worcester (pictured below, and highly recommended!) and Legoland (not so highly recommended).

Overall, the weather was cold and dreary, but that just made the few glimpses of sunshine even more sweet. This trip cemented in my mind that every penny we invest in quality time together as a family and exploring new places is worth so much more than money spent on toys and gifts that lose their luster all too quickly.
