What We've Been Reading Lately - July 2019

I finished more books than usual this month due to my husband taking the kids camping for a week and giving me a quiet house to myself (aside from my occasional visits to the campsite ). A beautiful week that I've been calling Introvert Heaven :) Big Magic: Creative Living Beyond Fear by Elizabeth Gilbert This, I believe, is the central question upon which all creative living hinges: Do you have the courage to bring forth the treasures that are hidden within you? I finished this one, and immediately started reading it again. Do you ever have books like that? The short, poignant chapters on inspiration and doing your work from one of our generation's most brilliant creative minds is a must read for all humans who desire to live fully alive. A Homeschool Day in the Life (with a 7- and a 5-year-old)

This year we are homeschooling Moses (age 7) and Abigail (age 5). My husband, Nick, and I both work outside the home so our routine varies from day to day. Two days a week Nick works in the morning and I work in the evening, two days a week I'm solo with the kids from dawn till dusk, two days a week Nick works late so I drop the kids off with our superhero friend, Mary, before heading in to work, and one day a week we are all together. Today falls into the first category, so I'll be with the kids in the morning and hand the kids off to Nick in the afternoon. 6:30 AM Abigail comes into my room, babbling sleepily about a funny show she watched yesterday. I snuggle her under the covers with me for about a half hour until she is wide awake. Then I send her to find Dad. Nick is already up and getting ready for work. He makes a few pieces of toast with peanut butter and leaves them on the table in case the kids get hungry before I'm ready to feed them. 7:30 AM Nick

Our Homeschool Year in Review

Today's the day when we turn our homeschool portfolio in to the local school district for review. It's a lot of work putting these binders together, but I love looking back on all we've learned together. Here's a summary of all that we did this school year: Math Saxon Math 2 for Moses Singapore Dimensions KA and KB for Abigail Life of Fred Apples , Butterflies , and Cats all together Spelling Moses did about 2/3 of Spelling Workout B before we decided to switch to Spelling You See We started at Level A in April and are very glad we made the change. Phonics We continued to work our way through The Ordinary Parent's Guide to Teaching Reading . At this moment, Moses is about 5 lessons away from finishing this 230 lesson behemoth that we've been working our way through since he was 4. We will definitely be celebrating when he's done! And then the torch passes to Abigail. We also did a lot of practicing with easy reader type books
